JUNIOR MEMBERSHIP

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the Junior Membership Program? It is a program designed specifically for young dancers between the ages of 12 and 18.  It is meant for those who are interested in exploring what it means to be a dance teacher and member of DMA.  Skills discussed and taught in the Junior Membership program help develop young dancers to become better dance assistants, and ultimately, dance instructors.

How big is the commitment? The program itself is not very time consuming.  The meetings, rehearsals, and volunteering opportunities are decided upon by the junior members.  One season of junior membership typically includes a meeting at the annual DMC convention, one sleepover/rehearsal/meeting during the Christmas break, a final meeting/rehearsal before the DMC PAC and Solo Title Competition, volunteering at the booth during said competition, and performing a routine at the Solo Title Competition.  Typically, there are only two meetings that do not coincide with predetermined DMC events.

Where are the meetings held? The junior members try to hold meetings that are in a location that is conveniently accessible to most studios. If this is not possible, we try to balance the meetings geographically, as all meetings DO NOT need to be held in the same location.

What are the incentives? Other than learning from and creating new relationships with like-minded dancers, past incentives have included watching a professional show, having a special class at the annual convention, accumulating high-school volunteer hours with a non-profit organization, and decorating special awards at our annual competition.  Syllabus study sessions, extra workshop classes, and hiring a guest choreographer for their annual routine are other goals the Junior Members have been working towards.

What are the costs?  $65 for new members; $45 for returning members.  On years that new JM-wear is designed and ordered, an extra cost may be incurred.

The Junior Membership Program with DMC Chapter #38 is always changing to the wants and needs of the junior members.  We aim to tailor the opportunities and commitment requirements to the dancers involved so that they can get the most out of the program.  The program is guided and supervised by a DMA-member, but many of the decisions made for the program are decided upon by the young dancers themselves.
